CHAPTER SEVEN

THE sharp point of the nappy pin pierced Cal’s thumb and he swallowed another curse to add to the many he’d silently uttered in the last five minutes. He couldn’t believe that he’d just woken up wrapped around all the softness that was Tess. The fact he’d managed to walk from the room was a miracle.

He hadn’t spooned with a woman in years. Sure, he’d had sex but that was all it had been. Sex and no strings. Since Felicity he’d avoided long-term relationships, avoided entrapment, which had been easy given his lifestyle. Most Frontline staff had similar views and their work didn’t allow for commitment to anything other than the job. And the job demanded one hundred per cent and then some.

But tonight not only had he spooned and slept like a log, he’d actually talked about Flick, something he never did. Tess had managed to sneak under his guard and that unnerved him. The woman was way too insightful as well as being as sexy as hell. He’d almost told her about James but fortunately had stopped himself. That was one secret he planned to keep.

Oscar’s watery eyes sparkled up at him as he hiccoughed before enthusiastically sucking his fist.

‘Nearly finished, mate. Food’s coming.’

He heard the post-office clock chime five. A new day was dawning, his ninth day in Narranbool. Nine days with Tess. He might hate Narranbool but spending time with Tess was no hardship. He’d never met anyone quite like her. She was a mixture of practicality and generosity, and she could get him to laugh—something he’d forgotten how to do.

Lighten up, Cal. James had always been the one to make him laugh. But James had gone and now their three years of estrangement circled his heart like barbed wire.

He closed the Velcro tabs on the nappy cover and manoeuvred the baby’s kicking legs into the growsuit. Clicking the snaps closed, he then picked up Oscar and laid him over his shoulder. The warmth and weight of the baby soaked into him and his heart expanded more.

Tess had said a doctor could be here in three weeks. He desperately hoped that was so. Tess needed a holiday before flying to London and he wanted a couple of weeks with Oscar, his parents and the nanny, settling them in before taking up the two-month rotation with Frontline he’d promised to lead.

He will grow so much while you’re away.

He steeled himself against the voice. As a surgeon he had a gift he had to share, and sometimes sacrifices had to be made for the greater good.

Tess’s heart rate picked up as she walked out the back door and admired the view. Callum’s taut backside stuck out of the car, his shorts pulled tightly across firm, muscular buttocks. He’d left the house half an hour ago to do a job. She heard a thump and a muttered oath.

She tried to peer around him into the car but his broad shoulders blocked the view and she couldn’t see what he was doing.
